Clearer vision begins with a visit with a member of the Laser Eye Center’s trusted team. Our doctors have a long history of helping patients just like you achieve the best vision possible without the need for visual aids. Read on as we take a deep dive into what to expect during and after your vision consultation.
Q: What does a vision consultation accomplish?
Laser Eye Center: The goal of your 90-minute consultation is to fully assess your eyes, vision and general health to determine whether you would benefit from any of our vision correction treatments. If LASIK is recommended, the information gathered during the visit will help plan out and guide your treatment.
Q: What happens during a vision consultation?
Laser Eye Center: Expect a comprehensive eye exam that evaluates and measures every aspect of your eyes, including the front and surface of your eyes as well as the internal structures. A series of sophisticated diagnostic tools and tests are employed to gather such information to provide us with your unique eye and vision profile. Upon completion of the assessment, we next educate you on the laser vision correction procedures for which you qualify, reviewing the benefits and costs as well as answering any questions you may have.
Q: Tell me more about these diagnostic tests that are performed during the consultation.
Laser Eye Center: Special drops will be administered to enlarge your pupils so we can see your lens and retina.
- The autorefractor is a computer-controlled machine that serves to provide an objective measurement of a person’s refractive error and prescription for glasses or contact lenses. How it works is by measuring how light alters as it enters a person’s eye.
- The Pentacam system will take three-dimensional photographs of your corneas so our doctors can study their shape, thickness, contour and structural integrity.
- The WaveLight Topolyzer Vario diagnostic device will take precise measurements of your corneas, finding and recording even the most minute visual defects. About 22,000 images are taken per eye! This information is used to produce a map of your unique corneal topography, which we use to customize your treatment. In other words, your left eye will receive a completely different treatment from your right eye based on its particular profile.
- Additionally, tests will be conducted to screen your general eye health such as reviewing your eye pressure and investigating for signs of dry eyes by exploring both the quality and quantity of your tears.
Q: Is the vision consultation uncomfortable or painful?
Laser Eye Center: Absolutely not!. The consultation process and diagnostic testing are painless and non-invasive. We ensure our team communicates with you about what happens at every point, so there are no surprises.
Q: The doctor cleared me for LASIK treatment and I scheduled my surgery. What should I expect on the day of surgery?
Laser Eye Center: Although the procedure itself lasts only a few minutes, plan to be at the surgery center for approximately three to four hours. This allows time for us to re-perform all of the diagnostic tests and scans as a second measure confirmation. In addition, all requisite paperwork will be completed and you will be presented with time to meet with both your doctor and surgeon in order to address any questions you may have. Lastly, once the procedure is completed, there is a short recovery period in which we will monitor you before clearing you to go home.
Q: What other appointments can I expect throughout my LASIK journey?
Laser Eye Center: Expect a series of follow-up visits, during which our doctors will monitor your healing progress. These visits will likely take place on the day immediately following surgery, the two-week mark from the date of surgery, and one month after surgery. The final “discharge” appointment is three months after surgery. Of course, we are always available by phone or email to answer your questions!
