An article published last year in Ophthalmology Times resonated with our team for its description of a concept called the surgical learning curve. According to the surgical learning curve, as a surgeon moves through residency training, and eventually into clinical practice, he or she can take one of two paths: competency or excellence.
The Competent Surgeon continues to do whatever he or she learned in residency without advancing clinical skills or learning about new techniques or technology. Moreover, the Competent Surgeon refers complex cases to other (“better suited”) surgeons, thereby alienating the opportunity for development, and lacks passion for the job.
By contrast, the Expert Surgeon is driven to be the best he or she can, excelling in every way so as to beat his/her own standards. A voracious learner, the Expert Surgeon invests in continuing education and strives to learn from each and every single case. Moreover, he or she eagerly embraces referrals for complicated cases and prepares diligently for such surgeries.

Consider this: After graduating medical school, a doctor must complete a residency program before they can practice. LASIK surgeons must follow a similar process of training wherein the surgeon is trained in the field by other experts in order to become certified on LASIK technology platforms and thereby be approved to practice.
As the original Laser Eye Center of Southern California, we have trained some of the most renowned doctors over the last 30 years. In fact, almost half of the laser eye surgeons practicing in Los Angeles today are former employees of Laser Eye Center, having spent years working with us — some for as many as 10 to 12 years — before setting up thriving businesses of their own.
