Conditions
Nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism are some of the most common refractive errors that require corrective eyewear, such as contact lenses and prescription eyeglasses. These vision problems are caused by a misshapen cornea (the clear dome at the front of the eye) and affect how the cornea and natural eye lens work together to focus light on the retinal tissue in the back of the eye.
Someone with nearsightedness struggles with blurry distant vision but can see clearly when an object is close by. Astigmatism occurs when the eye is shaped more like an oval or egg instead of a circle, causing blurry near and distant vision. These refractive errors can cause headaches, eye discomfort, and eyestrain and may make you squint in an attempt to see more clearly.
Treatment
If you rely on contact lenses or prescription glasses for clear vision, you’re no stranger to the inconveniences they bring. Yet, some folks hesitate when it comes to the idea of laser eye surgery, or they might not be eligible for procedures like LASIK or PRK. Enter the EVO Implantable Collamer® Lens (ICL), a remarkable solution for nearsightedness and astigmatism that doesn’t involve any permanent alterations to your cornea or natural lens. It’s a game-changer in permanent vision correction, offering an alternative to traditional eyewear and laser surgery.
At Laser Eye Center™, we proudly offer the revolutionary EVO ICL technology to enhance your eyesight. Crafted from biocompatible Collamer® material, the EVO ICL seamlessly integrates with your eye to elevate your vision. The journey begins with a thorough pre-operative eye examination to determine your suitability and confirm your vision prescription. The procedure itself is outpatient, allowing you to return home on the same day. Just make sure to have a family member or friend ready to drive you back.
Our seasoned refractive surgeons administer a topical or local anesthetic to numb the eyes before creating a tiny incision in the cornea to carefully insert and position your customized EVO ICL. Most patients report a painless experience that lasts a mere 20 to 30 minutes. Immediately after the placement, you’ll savor the joy of improved vision, and the recovery period is surprisingly swift. To aid in the healing process, our eye doctors may prescribe eye drops or medications and will schedule a follow-up appointment for the day after the surgery.

EVO ICL FAQs
1. WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR EVO ICL?
Are you between 21 and 45, experiencing challenges with distant vision (nearsightedness), and possibly dealing with astigmatism? If so, you might be an ideal candidate for EVO ICL. To qualify, your vision prescription must have remained stable for at least a year and must fall within these parameters: nearsightedness ranging from -3.0D to -20.0D and astigmatism from 1.0D to 4.0D. Notably, EVO ICL technology is a game-changer for individuals with dry eyes, severe myopia, or thin corneas, as they often don’t qualify for LASIK.
Our team of world-renowned eye surgeons will assess your eligibility during a comprehensive eye examination. This evaluation includes an in-depth analysis of your eye anatomy, such as anterior chamber depth and endothelial cell density. Feel free to discuss any allergies to medications or provide information about any family history of eye conditions, including cataracts, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, or glaucoma.
2. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EVO ICL?

- The procedure is swift and is an excellent option for those with thin corneas, boasting minimal recovery time.
- Worried about commitment? Don’t be! Our ophthalmologists can remove the ICL for flexible vision correction.
- EVO ICL offers UV protection and ensures superb eyesight both day and night.
- Once it’s in your eye, this lens becomes virtually invisible.
EVO ICL has transformed the lives of more than 2 million individuals worldwide and boasts an impressive 99.4% satisfaction rate, as revealed by patient surveys. With a solid track record in clinical trials and over a decade of international availability, this implantable contact lens technology continues to shine.
3. CAN EVO ICL BE REMOVED?
EVO ICL delivers permanent vision correction with zero maintenance required. Thanks to its non-invasive nature, it’s both reversible and removable. However, it’s crucial to note that if you choose to remove the lens, you’ll bid farewell to the enhanced vision it provides. At that point, you’ll need to return to corrective contact lenses or eyeglasses for clear sight.
Technology
EVO ICL is an implantable lens made of a patented Collamer® material that corrects mild to severe nearsightedness with or without astigmatism. The Collamer® contains a tiny amount of purified collagen, and the co-polymer material is a proprietary formula by STAAR Surgical. The ICL feels like a soft contact lens and is biocompatible with the eyes, meaning your inner eye won’t react to the material. EVO ICL contains an ultraviolet (UV) light filter to protect internal eye structures from UV damage.
This implantable contact lens is a phakic IOL, meaning it’s an additive intraocular lens implant (IOL) that does not remove the natural eye lens. EVO ICL is positioned between the iris (the pigmented portion of the eye) and the eye’s crystalline lens to correct specific refractive errors.
Other vision correction procedures make permanent changes to the eye. LASIK and PRK reshape corneal abnormalities causing nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, and refractive lens exchange removes the natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens implant to correct refractive errors, including presbyopia. EVO ICL works harmoniously with the cornea and natural lens, like adding a lens to a camera. The ICL can be a more attractive choice for some patients because it is designed to provide permanent vision improvement but is also removable.
EVO ICL also comes in a toric version called EVO TICL. These implantable contact lenses can correct a range of nearsightedness and astigmatism, including:
- EVO ICL can effectively correct -3.0 diopters (D) to -15.0D of myopia (nearsightedness) and partially addresses -15.0D to -20.0D of nearsightedness with an astigmatism range of 2.5D or less.
- EVO TICL addresses the same degrees of nearsightedness as its counterpart but works to correct more extensive astigmatism, ranging from 1.0D to 4.0D.
